Rebranding a North-West icon for its boldest era yet

BACKGROUND

For over 50 years, the Octagon Theatre has been the beating heart of culture in Bolton. Beloved, embedded, and genuinely irreplaceable - it's the kind of institution that doesn't just put on shows, it holds a community together. With a multi-million pound redevelopment underway, the theatre was stepping into a new chapter. It needed a brand identity to match.

CHALLENGE

The existing visual brand had evolved gradually over the decades - iterated rather than intentional. As the theatre prepared to reopen as a fully reimagined space, that incremental approach simply wasn't enough. The challenge was clear: create something that honoured 50+ years of history while giving the Octagon the confidence to own its future. A brand that felt extraordinary and down to earth in equal measure - just like the theatre and the Octagon community itself.

A NEW IDENTITY

The logo is rooted in something familiar: the shape of a theatre ticket. Simplified, refined, and tilted at exactly 8 degrees, it carries a quiet sense of dynamism. That tilt also gave the logotype a natural adaptability, extending cleanly into sub-brands for the Kitchen & Bar, Membership, and Patrons - a system that holds together without ever feeling rigid.

SHAPES AS LANGUAGE

Shapes form the backbone of the visual identity. Beyond the obvious nod to the theatre's name, they represent the movement and diversity woven into everything the Octagon does. Practically speaking, they mirror the theatre's own auditorium, which can be reconfigured into numerous layouts to suit each production. The brand literally reflects how the unique building works. That visual grammar - hexagons, circles, triangles, diamonds - creates a flexible framework for messaging and photography across digital, print, and signage. Consistency without constraint. Additionally, the brand messaging was developed to land instantly. Direct, warm, and immediately recognisable as Octagon - speaking to existing audiences while opening the door to new ones. Photography followed the same philosophy. The Octagon is committed to inclusivity, and this shaped every casting decision for the brand shoot. Real people, from the community. Including a head boy from the original opening night audience, decades on.

BUILT TO LAST

A theatre brand has to work hard season after season, show after show. Longevity wasn't a nice-to-have, so developing a flexible brand toolkit was imperative for the Octagon team to take forward. We developed a show poster framework that champions production-specific typography and creative, while remaining unmistakably Octagon. Every poster is finished with a stamp of pride, 'Made in Bolton', connecting with local audiences and wearing the theatre's roots as a badge of honour. The result is a brand with the confidence to evolve, and the consistency to endure. Crafted at Design by Day
